Dan's Nasty Frogs

The Nasty Frogmen are very excited to introduce the latest addition to their sports training programs especially designed for teens: Dan’s Nasty Frogs.

Participants will learn archery, tree climbing with a harness, surfing, free diving and kayaking. Great fun for friends and siblings they get to challenge themselves and each other before ultimately becoming a Nasty Frog and collecting their certificate!

Archery

Starting with a safety brief, participants will get taught the basics of how to put a recurve bow together, string it, and what equipment will be used while firing the bow

After a short walk through the jungle to our archery range, participants will be taught how to position their bodies properly to align arrow with target, what stance to take with the bow, and correct arm position.

Participants will then be given the chance to fire their first volley of arrows at the 10m target. The instructor will then tweak their techniques as necessary

Once proficient at hitting the 10m target, students will move on to the 20m and finally the 30m.

Participants will then learn how to care for the bow, how to destring and collect arrows as necessary.

Kayaking

Starting with a safety brief, participants will be taught how to set up a kayak for a sea voyage (with dry bag, safety line, signal device, communication device, PFD).

Participants will then get taught how to paddle the kayak on land first, including how to turn and the “rudder” technique.

Depending on weather conditions, participants will be taught how to get a kayak out in big waves then check all equipment, or get taught how to mount the kayak in calm water making sure all equipment is ready.

After a practice paddle, participants will be taught how to balance on the kayak, how to fall of the kayak, and how to right an upturned kayak*
*Note, we use Paddle Skis that are sat upon, rather than traditional kayaks that are sat in

Time and weather allowing, participants will then paddle to the small beach around the corner from Sea Gypsy, and learn how to beach a kayak on a rocky shore

Kayakers will then turn back for Sea Gypsy beach, land the kayak and then learn proper maintenance and cleaning procedure.

Freediving

Starting with a safety brief, participants will first get taught about the best conditions for free diving, how it can benefit you mentally and physically, and where you can go free diving in the world

Next, participants will be taught proper breathing techniques and how to hold their breath for progressively longer periods of time. The dunk tank at the DB will be used to help with this.

Participants will then be taught how to fit a mask, snorkel, and fins properly, and the reasons that free divers may use a weight belt.

Participants will then get brought out to a depth of 1.5 m and duck dive for weights, increasing the time spent underwater with each breath.

When comfortable, the instructor will proceed to the house reef, where everyone will have a go at duck diving down the rope to see the boat.

Care and cleaning for all equipment

Tree Climbing

Starting with a safety brief, participants will be taught all the equipment that they will be using, why people climb trees around the world, and the inherent risks of the activity.

Participants will then be taught the different knots associated with climbing and why they may come in useful in every day life. These knots include bowline, figure 8 and retraced figure 8.

Participants will then move to the first easy tree, and taught the proper way to belay a climber, along with the various commands and signals used by climbers to denote danger or communication.

Participants will then move to the second, more difficult tree, and will have the challenge of trying to climb to a level of 20m up the tree

Time allowing, participants will move the third tree, and get the opportunity to climb to a height of 30m.

Participants will finally get taught how to properly clean and maintain equipment.

Surfing

Starting with a safety brief, participants will be taught the best weather conditions to surf in, what is the best equipment to use for beginners, and where they can surf in the world.

Participants will then get taught how to first kneel, and then stand on a board, while on dry land. It will also be ascertained what is their strongest foot and the correct placement of footing depending on the shape of the wave.

Participants will then head into the water for a surf lesson, starting in the white water and slowly working their way up to bigger waves further out to sea.

Participants aim will be to be able to stand on the board for a period of 10 seconds by the end of the session.

Upon returning to the DB, participants will learn how to properly care for a board after use.
